WEDNESDAY 4th JULY

A lovely slow relaxed morning. Finished washing and had egg and bacon brekkie Nev is pretty good on the barbie!!
Went to the Underground Hospital which was really interesting. After Darwin was bombed in WW2 they thought Mt Isa world be next for its mineral wealth. So the miners on their days off and after their shifts built an underground hospital in case in case of an attack. It was built next to the existing hospital.
It wasn’t used and fell into disrepair until 1977 when it was uncovered accidently and repaired and made safe as a tourist site. It is full of old hospital equipment and original photos. It is built straight into a hillside you would never know it was there.

Near escape exit in hospital

Nev at the underground operating theatre

Entrance in hillside you never know it ws there!
Then we called back to info centre for morning tea and a look at The Isa Experience Museum another amazing place. Telling the history of Mt Isa, the hardships and its move to the present day success of the city. Really well done.

An excellent museum about history of Mt Isa
In the afternoon we went for a drive to Lake Moondarra for a picnic lunch. The mines dammed the Leichhardt River to create the lake and a water supply and recreational area for the growing town in 1957. We walked the dam wall and had lunch watching the birds on the lake. A lovely area.
